Taurine For Dogs

By Hungry Bark | August 1, 2020

Most of us will only encounter taurine, at least knowingly, when consuming our favorite energy drinks as taurine is a common additive. Manufacturers add taurine to energy drinks for its positive effects on health and our mental wellness. If taurine is good for us, does that mean taurine is also good for dogs?

What is Taurine?

Before deciding whether or not taurine is a health addition to your dog’s diet, it is important to learn what taurine even is. Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid that occurs naturally in your body. Taurine is important for a variety of functions including cardiac function, electrolyte balance, digestion, central nervous system support, and immune system regulation. Taurine is most concentrated in the brain, eyes, heart, and muscles.

As mentioned, taurine is an amino acid. However, it is considered a conditionally essential amino acid. This means that healthy dogs can produce the minimal amount of taurine needed to conduct bodily functions. But the fact of the matter is, some dogs do need an added boost of taurine and can get this from a variety of sources.

Do Dogs Need Taurine?

Absolutely! Dogs need all 22 amino acids to the correct quantities in order to live long, healthy, fulfilling lives. Whether dogs produce their own required taurine or need a boost is entirely dependent on the individual dog.

Without proper levels of taurine, there are dangerous health concerns to consider. Most commonly, Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a disease of the heart muscle that is often caused by taurine deficiency. DCM is a chronic disease and may present mild to severe symptoms depending on the dog.

If you have any concerns about your dog’s taurine levels, it’s always a good idea to consult your veterinarian. But rest assured, there are simple ways to add taurine to your dog’s daily regimen.
